Boldin practices; listed as questionable
0
Comment
January 9
Arizona Republic
"Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin practiced on a limited basis Friday morning and is listed as questionable for Saturday night's playoff game at Carolina. Boldin suffered a strained hamstring last week against Atlanta and Friday was his first workout of the week. The practice was closed to the media and it's unknown how much work Boldin did. Boldin said Thursday he will test the hamstring a few hours before the game and determine then if he can play."
Titans center misses practice again

Tennessean
"The Titans practiced Thursday for the last time before Saturday's AFC Divisional playoff game against the Ravens, and once again they were without center Kevin Mawae. Second-year pro Leroy Harris worked in place of Mawae, who hasn't played or practiced since suffering a right elbow injury on Dec. 21 against the Steelers and isn't expected to play Saturday. "My situation has not changed from the beginning of the week,'' Mawae said. "That's all I can say.'' The good news for the Titans: defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (knee) and defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch (groin) practiced for the third straight day and are expected to play. "They should be fine,'' Fisher said."
Bush says knee surgery nothing to worry about

January 9
New Orleans Times-Picayune
"Saints tailback Reggie Bush said he was surprised to see how much of a stir was created by the news of his recent knee surgery. Both he and Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis insisted the surgery was less serious than perceived because of the negative connotation associated with the term "microfracture." Bush said he was off crutches less than two weeks after he had the arthroscopic procedure performed in mid-December, and he already is working out. "I feel like I'm right on track," said Bush, who expects to fully participate in the team's offseason training program, beginning in mid-March. Bush said the surgical procedure, performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., was a ..."
Cleveland Browns' Eric Mangini confirms he has offensive and defensive coordinators in mind

Cleveland Plain Dealer
"Browns coach Eric Mangini confirmed Thursday that his top choices for offensive and defensive coordinators are Brian Daboll and Rob Ryan, respectively. Daboll is the New York Jets quarterbacks coach and Ryan the Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator. Ryan cleaned out his office in Oakland on Thursday and the Raiders told him he's free to go even though his contract isn't up until Tuesday. Ryan, whom Mangini has coveted for several years, is expected to accept the job. If he does, he might bring Raiders linebackers coach Don Martindale with him. The two were inseparable in Oakland. Mangini admitted he's interested in current Jets offensive line coach Bill Callahan, but Callahan is under ..."

Brewers, reliever agree to one-year deal

January 9
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
"Every player likes being wanted, even baseball's all-time saves leader, a sure-fire Hall of Famer. In what amounted to an intense full-court press over the past few days, the Milwaukee Brewers let Trevor Hoffman know just how much they wanted him. "They were very aggressive in their pursuit of Trevor," agent Rick Thurman confirmed in a telephone interview. That's what it took to overcome the geographical disadvantage the Brewers had in going head-to-head with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the services of the 41-year-old changeup specialist. The Brewers sealed the deal Thursday morning with a one-year offer for $6 million with an additional $1.5 million in incentives based on games finished. ..."
Wren, Cox meet with Lowe at Turner Field

January 9
Atlanta Journal-Constitution
"Braves officials met Thursday with free-agent pitcher Derek Lowe at Turner Field, with the shock of John Smoltz's exit reverberating in Atlanta and an increased sense of urgency in the air. General manager Frank Wren and manager Bobby Cox met for several hours with agent Scott Boras and Lowe, the most accomplished and durable pitcher left on the free-agent market. "We had a nice talk, went pretty good," Cox said. "Derek's in great shape, ready to go. Who knows? Hopefully we can get close with him." The Braves' offer was unknown. The only offer Lowe had before Thursday was reportedly a three-year, $36 million proposal from the New York Mets (Boras said that offer was never made, and ..."
Mark Kotsay set to re-sign

January 9
Boston Herald
"After adding one role player yesterday by signing outfielder Rocco Baldelli to a one-year, $500,000 deal with incentives, the Red Sox are poised to add another soon. Mark Kotsay, whom the Sox obtained from Atlanta last August, has agreed in principle on a one-year deal to return to the club, pending a physical and completion of the contract. Kotsay will earn $1.5 million plus incentives. The 33-year-old Kotsay hit .226 with 12 RBI in 22 regular-season games with the Sox. In the postseason, when third baseman Mike Lowell went down with a hip injury and the Sox were forced to move Kevin Youkilis back to third, Kotsay took over as the team’s starting first baseman. This season, Kotsay is ..."
Pedro Martinez Lobbies For Met Return - And For Lowe

January 9
New York Post
"Pedro Martinez spent yesterday afternoon entertaining friends on his boat in the Dominican Republic. The future Hall of Fame pitcher wants to sail - back to the Mets. In an exclusive interview with The Post, Martinez said he's open to pitching just about anywhere in 2009, but the Mets are far and away his first choice. He also urged the Mets to sign free-agent righty Derek Lowe, Martinez's former teammate on the Red Sox. Martinez's agent, Fern Cuza, is expected to speak with Met GM Omar Minaya next week about re-signing the 37-year-old right-hander. Minaya has indicated throughout the offseason that Martinez is a realistic option. "I went over to the Mets with something in mind, to win a ..."

New Darius twist: Blazers issue warning to rest of league

January 9
Oregonian
"A new and surprising chapter in the never-ending Darius Miles saga reportedly surfaced late Thursday night. Ian Thomsen of Sports Illustrated is reporting that Trail Blazers president Larry Miller has issued a warning to NBA presidents and general managers regarding the potential signing of Miles. According to Thomsen, citing a copy of an e-mail Miller sent Thursday night, the Blazers intend to do what is necessary to "safeguard its rights, including, without limitation, litigation," in the event that another NBA team signs Miles simply to negatively impact the Blazers' salary cap and luxury tax threshold. We've reported about the "Miles issue" countless times. But for a brief refresher: ..."
Larry Hughes, Bulls want same thing: To part ways

January 9
Chicago Tribune
"Larry Hughes has been traded twice during his 11-year career, and that number will grow this season if the Bulls and Hughes get their way. "If you get traded, obviously another team wants you, so it's always a positive in that way," Hughes said. "I definitely want to play minutes and contribute. That's a focus of mine. Hopefully, I'll get the opportunity to do that in the near future." Hughes has made it abundantly clear he would like to play more, venting frustration over his non-starting and limited role twice. And the Bulls absolutely are willing to accommodate him by the Feb. 19 trade deadline to alleviate their crowded backcourt situation. But the Bulls are equally as clear they won't ..."
Rip Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace may both return to Pistons lineup tonight

January 9
Detroit Free Press
"It appears there's a good chance Richard Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace will return to the lineup tonight to face the Nuggets. Both players took part in Thursday's short practice, and Wallace was extremely active, running around and shooting three-pointers. Hamilton was not quite as active, but he has indicated that he wants to face his friend Billups. Pistons coach Michael Curry said it will be a game-time decision for both players."
Luol Deng won't return to Chicago Bulls until he is 100 percent healthy
0
Comment
January 9
Chicago Tribune
"The good news is Luol Deng practiced Thursday for the second straight day. The bad news is Deng's left ankle, still recovering from a Dec. 26 sprain, didn't feel as good, and his return from a six-game absence to play Friday night against the Wizards isn't as certain. "Most likely, I probably won't be able to go," Deng said. "I'm pretty close. But coming back and not being 100 percent isn't going to help the team. I know we need to start winning, but I don't want to be favoring it." Whether Deng returns Friday, Saturday against the Thunder or Monday against the Trail Blazers, the next task will be to better incorporate him into the offense. Deng's slashing game is suited to an offense that ..."

Grabovski suspended for three games

Toronto Sun
"Mikhael Grabovski's emotional return to play his former team has come with a price. The Leafs forward was suspended for three games today for pushing NHL linesman Scott Cherrey late in Thursday's 6-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Grabovski became animated in his attempt to get at Montreal's Sergei Kostitsyn late in the third period. After being tackled to the ice, Grabovski got up and shoved the official earning a mandatory three-game suspension today. "It's automatic," Leafs assistant to the general manager, Cliff Fletcher said. "The bottom line is you can't touch an official. There's no appeal process. "(Grabovski) plays with a lot of emotion and we like that about him. But you can't ..."
Kings' Moller injured with fractured clavicle

NHL.com
"Oscar Moller who started the season with the Kings after winning a roster spot out of training camp, was assigned to Team Sweden at the World Junior Championships on Dec. 19. A Team Captain, Moller posted 1-3=4 in six games, leading Sweden to a Silver medal. Moller, however, injured his shoulder at the six-minute mark of the second period of Team Sweden's 5-0 win over Russia on Dec. 31. He did not return to the game but played in each of the Team's remaining two games. Moller was recalled to the Kings on Jan. 6 and skated yesterday at practice and was expected to return to the lineup. However, after suffering from some soreness in his shoulder, the Kings medical staff inspected the injury ..."
Kaberle will go if Leafs don't want him

January 9
Toronto Star
"Tomas Kaberle says he would waive his no-trade clause, but only if the Maple Leafs made it clear the 10-year veteran was no longer part of the club's plans for the future. "Obviously, you don't want to play for a team that doesn't want you to play for them," Kaberle said before last night's game. Kaberle, who was celebrating his fourth career all-star selection yesterday, said the Leafs have not asked him to waive the clause, which was written into the first three years of a five-year, $21.25 million (all figures U.S.) extension he signed in February 2006. However, the Leafs, under new GM Brian Burke, are expected to revamp the roster with young talent and clear out most if not all the ..."
Can a Canadian team break Cup drought?
0
Comment
January 9
Calgary Herald
"In Toronto, it is almost too painful to talk about. In talking about 1967, Leafs Nation is remembering a better time, when the franchise they root for and shower their money upon were the Stanley Cup champions. In Calgary, the 1989 Flames, the first and last Calgary squad to drink from hockey's famous mug, are something an entire generation of Calgarians was not alive to see. In Edmonton, the glory days of the 1980s are long gone. And further west in Vancouver and in Ottawa, there is even less: the Canucks' magical run to the final that fell short in 1994; and the Senators' bitter final defeat to Anaheim in 2007, the year Ottawa's window closed. What there has not been, at least not ..."
