For the second year running, the illustrious title of "WorldReferee of the year" goes to a grand referee who is about to retire. Last year it was Markus Merk who walked away with the laurels, this year it's Peter Frojdfeldt. We're not in the habit of handing out going away presents, but there you have it.It does make you wonder what mechanisms are at work here. Does the fact that this is the last year for a ref coax our reporters into handing out better marks? Is it the referee himself who gives it all he's got in his last year? Or is it all just a coincidence? Fact is that this has been an outstanding year for Peter Frojdfeldt and he absolutely deserves this mighty accolade. The WorldReferee team congratulate Peter on winning our prize of prizes. So in 2009 we need more people from outside Europe to write for us, to give marks for referees no one has seen yet. And to keep up the good work..... UEFA have been experimenting with two additional assistant referees standing behind the goalline. These two have the mission to focus on what happens in the penalty box. It could be a good idea, but maybe a bit of a boring job, in some games the players don't even get to the penalty area and it hardly requires any running.first paragraph

2008 has been a great year. The WorldReferee website is really becoming the most informative source at the internet about international referees.The website itself is developing: new functions are added and it's become more easy to find information.At the end of 2008 the WorldReferee database consisted of 12577 matches, 1476 teams, 1119 referees and 147 reporters worldwide.More and more users do find the website and do enter their comments and information. Since we've started in 2005, the amount of hits still doubles every four months.Best of all, the amount of information and match reports, are growing constantly. On December 9 2008, Polish referee Gilewski was arrested in his hometown Radom. Gilewski stands accused of taking bribes during the 2003-2005 season. He was taken into custody and released on bail a day later. Giwelski is on the provisional list of 38 referees for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.Since 2005 the Polish government has been investigating alleged casese of corruption within Polish professional sports. Earlier, in September 2008, the managing board of the Polish Football Association was suspended by Poland's sports ministry. Reason given was: 'they failed to take adequate steps to address corruption issues'. So far some 170 persons have been indicted. Poland is co-hosting the European Championship in 2012.
